RIVERWALK GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY TAKES PLACE

March 19, 2010; 10 a.m. – City, County and state officials gathered in Gateway Park located at First Avenue and Lincoln Highway in the City of Coatesville to commemorate the eagerly anticipated start of the Riverwalk Project.  Following remarks, officials traveled across Lincoln Highway to the project entrance to officially break ground.

The River Walk/ Brandywine Creek Trail consists of the construction of a walk/bike path along the West branch of the Brandywine Creek.

This project is being financed by Chester County and Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) grants.  Grants cover the cost of the entire project: $1,250,000.  This project is funded in part by a $1 million dollar grant from the County Commissioners and a $250,000 grant from the State.  The City grant match requirement is met.

Phase I of the project begins at Lincoln Highway, extends to Glencrest Avenue and consists of two parts (part A & part B).  Part A of Phase I starts at Lincoln Highway North to the border between Valley Township and Coatesville.  Phase I – Part B is from this point North to Glencrest and is entirely within the Municipal limits of Valley Township.

In the current form, the project consists of three total phases.  The City hopes to expand the river walk project to Route 340 however; future phases require easements and additional funding.

Phase I Part A has been bid to Kenney Excavating.  This phase will begin in 2010.

A splash pad welcoming kids and adults at the Lincoln Highway entrance will also be installed.
