Accessibility

The City of Coatesville is surrounded by major highway systems that link regional population centers. Probably the most important to the City of Coatesville is the U. S. Route 30 Corridor that consists of the Route 30 Bypass and Business Route 30. The Route 30 Bypass is located at the northern most portion of the and provides a limited access highway link from Lancaster to Philadelphia.

The economic development implications of the completed Route 30 Bypass are enormous to the City and the Central Chester County Region. Route 30 also connects the City to PA Routes 10 and 100, the major north-south highways in Chester County. Business Route 30 continues to be the most important commercial road in the region.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) which located northeast of the City and provides links with Philadelphia and New Jersey to the east, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh to the west and Allentown and Scranton-Wilkes Barre in northeast Pennsylvania. Turnpike entrances are located at Morgantown and Lionville, approximately 13 miles and 11 miles from the City, respectively.

PA Route 82 traverses the west central portion of the City and is a north-south access road within the region that links Reading to the State of Delaware.

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is 35 miles from the Coatesville area. PHL serves as the principal gateway for the fifth largest metropolitan population in the United States.

Located approximately seven (7) miles from downtown Philadelphia, the Airport is easily accessible from Interstates 76, 95, and 476. In addition, rail service to the Airport is available on SEPTA'S High Speed Rail Line (R1) train that operates from 5:25 AM until 11:25 PM daily, every 30 minutes, with easy connections to AMTRAK at 30th Street Station.

Approximately twenty-five (25) scheduled passenger carriers and non-scheduled charters serve over 100 domestic and international destinations daily. In addition, eight (8) all-cargo airlines handle over 616,693 tons of cargo annually.

The Chester County Airport is only three miles from the City. Chester County Airport features a 5400' x 100' grooved runway. Public Transportation

Public TransportationThe Coatesville LINK has daily and affordable bus service citywide. The LINK bus service also connects the City of Coatesville with neighboring municipalities including South Coatesville, Caln, Modena and Valley. Additionally Krapf's Transit provides service from Coatesville to West Chester. Chester Para transit is available to Senior Citizens and Chester Para transit services Handicapped residents of Coatesville. In addition, Chester Para transit provides door-to-door transportation for persons with disabilities to residents Countywide.

Rail

Two railroads serve the Coatesville area. The Norfolk/Southern line runs through the area and the Brandywine Valley Railroad which services the Bethlehem Lukens Plate Steel Facility.

Norfolk Southern and CSX Corp. filed a joint application with the Surface Transportation Board (STB) for authority to operate the routes and assets of Conrail. As a result of the transaction, Norfolk Southern rail operations grew to include some 7,200 miles of the Conrail system. Perhaps Conrail's best-known predecessor, however, was the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) which began as a line from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, with its first train pulled by a wood-burning "Mifflin" locomotive. This merger created a balanced rail transportation in the East because of its access to the populous Northeast and its busy ports.

Located on the upper Delaware River, the Port's facilities include more than forty private and public facilities capable of servicing bulk, break bulk and containerized cargoes. Additionally, the Port operates a cruise passenger terminal at the former site of the Philadelphia Naval Base and AmeriPort, the region's intermodal transfer facility. The Port has dedicated facilities capable of handling forest products, cocoa beans, automobiles and refrigerated cargoes.
